My lamp repair is shorting out?

I successfully replaced the socket on a non-working lamp, but whenever I plug it in to test it, there's a spark at the plug and a spark at bulb. The lamp is very old and the wires are not good. Is that my problem? Should I replace the whole cord? The wires are both white (no way to distinguish them as whether it's the ground wire or something else.)

It probably IS a good idea to change the cord. Many older lamps have cords that have become brittle over time, so whenever I change a socket, I also change the cord. I usually just buy a new extension cord with the three in one female end, and just cut that end off. I'm not a big fan of the plugs that you snap together over a standard cord, and an extension cord with a molded plug is pretty inexpensive. For lamps, the color won't matter. As long as there are two wires you're good to go. No ground on lamps.
