Storing computer parts?
I'm sending my motherboard in for an RMA, but in the meantime, I need somewhere to store my parts. Is it ok to store my parts in my computer case? Will they get shocked from Electro Static Discharge if I keep them in there?
Also another question about arctic silver 5, Do I have to spread it around everywhere for it to take full effect, or should I leave a bit in the middle and let it spread around when I install the heatsink? I used the stock heatsink that came with some thermal paste already added.
I don't think you understand. They won't be connected to the motherboard and at a larger chance of ESD, I was just asking if it's safe to keep them in the case WITHOUT them being connected the the motherboard, because they would be grounded if they were connected to the motherboard because of the standoffs.
Yes, you can keep the parts inside the case, it would actually be the safest place for them while your wait for the RMA return.
As for arctic silver paste, you want to use a grain of rice sized dab on the processor. You can use an old credit card to spread it around evenly over the surface. But what I do is leave the dab in the middle of the processor, then when I install the heatsink/fan, before I lock it into place, I gently press down on the heatsink and twist back forth to spread the paste....it's worked for me for the paste 10 years...
