The Metric System - Past, Present And Future
The metric system is used in most countries around the globe. Besides the United States, only Myanmar and Liberia regularly use other units of measurement. Given the advantages of the metric system, why does the U.S. lag in this regard?
The metric system was originated in 17th century England, although, as with many innovations, many of its ideas can be traced back much earlier. Simon Stevin, a mathematician of those times, first proposed the use of a standardized measurement system based on decimal conversion in a 1586 pamphlet. From that idea came John Wilkins’s plan, which is much of the system we use today.
It is interesting to note that the metric system is used much more widely in other parts of the world than it is in the United States. When it was made a legal system of measure in 1866, the United States was one of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures’ founding members. The metric system was then adopted in 1975 for military and government agency use. There are many laws and amendments which require metric labeling on packaging, yet the system is still employed on a voluntary basis in most other respects.
The United States Metric Association (USMA) is the probably the biggest proponent for the use of the metric system in the United States. The group was founded in 1916 and has pressed for laws intended to promote metrication, which is the conversion to the metric system. The group has worked to educate the public about the system’s benefits and properties, and has played a key role in creating many laws for use of the metric system.
Much of the opposition to metrication hinges upon the system's unfamiliarity. The English system, cumbersome though it may be, is something we've learned to live with for years. We're so familiar with its issues that we think nothing of making English or metric conversions between measurements when needed, or don't realize just how confusing the system really is.
There are a number of benefits to the metric system, however. We often need to use a conversion tool to change between imperial units of measure, though the metric system eliminates this need. All quantities are measured in units that can be converted between using powers of ten. Cooking with the metric system is a comparative breeze, since you're not stuck wondering how many cups are in a gallon or how many teaspoons are in a cup. Similarly, the metric system uses a single unit for any type of measuring. Compare this to two or more units used when measuring any quantity in the imperial system and you'll quickly see the advantages.
Using a single system vastly lessens the possibility for errors, which may be its greatest strength. Consider the example of overloaded aircrafts due to confusion between mass in pounds and in kilograms. A Canadian jet ran out of fuel in 1983 because its gauges were based on metric units but the fuel was provided in imperial units.
Even more costly was the mistake made by NASA when it lost its 1999 Mars orbiter when one team used metric units while another used the imperial system. NASA, a group of experts who should have known better and who normally show a great deal of attention to such important details, demonstrates the importance of using one system universally.
Therefore, if we adopt the metric system and encourage people to become accustomed to using it, we can take a big step in preventing similar life-threatening errors.
